A 45 Year Running Streak Comes to an End

Have you heard about Mark Covert, the 68 year old man who has been running every day for 45 years? He ended his streak on Tuesday due to a foot injury, after running nearly 150,000 miles. Mind blown.

Congratulations Mr. Covert, on a feat that I will never even come close to reaching. Your dedication to this sport is truly amazing. I am in awe of your accomplishment and am inspired by you.

A Gym with no AC is like...

Well, it's like being outside, but I'm paying a monthly fee. Oh, and it is much stinkier too.

It was a miserable run in the 90+ degree temperature. At least the treadmill had a working fan on it. The fan-cooled air had to be at least 1 degree cooler, pleasant almost!

Mashed Potatoes and Puréed Fruit

I haven't been blogging much, but I've actually been running regularly. I've been fully immersed in vacation planning and dealing with a withdrawn dog. We're going to Argentina in August (more to come on that trip) and Eddie hurt his back again. Therefore, I've been addicted to the Internet and a doting mother, but haven't been focused on much else.

I did make it out into the heat today to get a long run in...and it was brutal. Everything felt wrong, my Camel was ridiculously heavy, my arms wouldn't move the way I told them to, and I generally felt like a bowl of mashed potatoes. No, I was not craving them for a snack. I actually felt like I was a big blob of them, slowly moving through the park. It was awful.

I also ventured to try one of th Powerbar fruit pouches that we picked up at a race expo. I've eaten the ones made for kids during my run before and I love them. I figured that Powerbar might be able to improve upon an already great product. I was wrong. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't right. It was too sweet, and that's pretty significant considering I have one of the world's worst sweet tooths... I could eat a dozen cupcakes, but had trouble downing a 3 ounce packet of puréed fruit. I think I'll stick to the ones that have Cinderella on them!

When I'm Old, I Hope I'm Half this Awesome!

The USA Masters Outdoor Championships were held over the weekend in Olathe, KS. And those old dudes ROCKED IT! They broke 20 records (7 World and 13 American)!

Orville Rogers, a 95 year old grandfather from the town I call home, Dallas, knocked the 400 meter record for his age group out of the park, beating the world record by 16 seconds! His time was 2:21.82! Orville, you are my hero!

There Must be Something in the Water

Either that, or the miles are shorter in NYC than they are in the rest of the country! I'll be honest, I really haven't been drinking much water, so the latter must be true. I'm in the city that never sleeps for the long holiday weekend and have maybe done a bit of partying. And what's my fave thing to do after a long night of drinking? Run!

As you can tell, I was kind of excited to be in the Big Apple. I attempted this photo twice...and hurt my feet when I landed on the pier. No matter, a little foot pain never slowed me down.

I was staying with one of my best friends in Long Island City just across the river from Manhattan. Long Island City is not Long Island, but Queens, obviously. This place is way too confusing for out of towners!

We ran from Long Island City to Roosevelt Island. I'd never heard of it before...but it is a very peaceful little island on the Hudson with incredible views of the city.

And an impressive memorial to its namesake, FDR. The island was very different from the bustling metropolis across the river, it was practically deserted.

This was a great run, and even though it was boiling hot outside, I rocked it. This was the fastest I've ever run this distance before. We ran 7 miles at a sub 10 minute pace! I killed it!

Pheidippides

We all know the story of the marathon. Pheidippides ran from the town of Marathon on Athens, just under 25 miles (the Brits extended this to 26.2 miles In the 1908 Olympic Games to have the finish line in front of the Royal family) to share the news of victory. He promptly died.

I know this is insensitive, but anyone who has run a marathon can certainly relate to this!
