The 2013 Boston Marathon bombings is one of the significant historical events where I will remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the moment I found out for the rest of my life. At 34 years of age, there are only 3 other events that I cannot forget either.
The events of the bombings a year ago and the subsequent manhunt were so terrifying and confusing for me. I'm still not sure I have come to terms with why these terrorists chose the Boston Marathon to manifest such a terrible tragedy. If you have ever been to the finish line of a race, let alone a marathon, you know that it is one of the most the most joyful places in the world. Runners who have been training for months,or even years, to cross that finish line are reuniting with the families that supported them along the way, is a magical experience to be a part of. The Boston Marathon is a race most of us will train our whole lives to qualify for, but never make it. That finish line is hallowed ground for runners.
My heart goes out to the bombing victims and their families on the year anniversary tragedy. Their courage and perseverance are a testament to the power of the human spirit, to the strength of the running community. Boston strong.
